From Blackouts to Breakthroughs: How Magiro Power Transformed Our Tea Factory

“At CHT-Kiriti Tea Factory, we used to go without power for days, sometimes even up to three days straight. Our generator would frequently fail, and when it did work, the cost of running it daily was unbelievable.

If we had a blackout on a Friday, the technicians wouldn’t come to fix it until Monday, and by then, the tea would spoil.

By God’s grace, I heard about someone in Gikoe called John Magiro who was generating hydropower. So, I decided to visit him in Gikoe, which was about 15 km from our tea factory. I remember that this was on 12th August 2021.

At first, I thought it would be as simple as connecting some wires from his mini grid to my factory. But when we sat down together, I learned that John had teamed up with a Belgian entrepreneur, Thomas Poelmans. They were generating clean energy but didn’t know who would use it since the local community needed very little power.

I like to think my visit came at the perfect time because my tea factory was ready to consume the energy they were producing, giving us the clean and reliable power, we needed.

A few months later, we started receiving visitors from Belgium who came to confirm that my tea factory could indeed use the power John and Thomas were generating. Once that was settled, everything began to move quickly. In 2022, they built power lines towards my factory and even delivered a transformer.

By February 2023, and without us contributing even a single cent, our factory was fully powered.

Now, I’m pleased to say that CHT-Kiriti Tea Factory enjoys reliable electricity 99.9% of the time. And in the rare case that Magiro Power goes out, we have Kenya Power as a backup.

If you're tired of power outages and high energy costs, I encourage you to reach out to Magiro Power to discover how they can power both your home and your business.”
